re-build master cylinder?

My 88 560SL's brake pedal went to the floor yesterday after getting a bit spongy over the last few days.

I am wondering if anyone has re-built theirs or just replaced it. The cylinder exterior, fittings, reservior all look new so I'd like to re-build as opposed to replace.

Any hints? Do I need a press etc.?

Should I attempt?

Thanks

John

Just checked the site's parts catalog and note the repair kits are out of stock. Check with Phil, he may have be able to get one for you. That said, I'd probably just put in a new (not rebuilt) ATE unit and know that it is proper from the git go.

Rebuild an alternator? Sure. Starter? Why not. Engine? Absolutely.
Master cylinder?
Not on MY life.

It's very easy. All you need is a couple of wrenches and a garbage pail. Wrenches to remove and replace the old one with a new one and a garbage pail to put the old one into.

It is made of aluminum you can't rebuild it.
Get a now one, you don't have to replace the reservoir.
Regards.

Sounds Unanimous!

I have rebuilt wheel cylinders etc, I'll look into a new one. The nice thing about a second car is you can take your time!

Thanks.
