Oil Change - 88 560 SL
Does anyone know what size hex nut the oil pan drain plug is?? If I had to guess, I would say 14 or 15 mm, but I don't have anything close to that, and don't want to buy a whole set.
Also, I was reading through some posts (you guys are awesome!) and came across one that referenced a somewhat typical "clattering" noise on start-up. I've experienced that once, and it went away almost immediately. That was last summer, and I have not driven the car a lot since then - maybe a hundred miles. Should I be worried? Thanks, -Rex. 88 560SL 08 C300 |

oil drain plug
14mm for drain plug.
If you seldom drive the car or start the engine, the oil in the top end will eventually drain into the crankcase and you will hear a little clatter until it finds it's way back to the top end and pressure comes up. If the car has less than 100k miles, don't worry about it unless it persists particularly on warm startup. In that case, have your cam covers pulled to check chain gear condition. If you hear clatter after the engine warms up it could also be the hydraulic compensating elements thats worn. That can happen if the car sites, the oil drains down into the pan and then when it is started it will for a few seconds withoit oil and cause wear. With these thye cars that doesn't - normally - see a lot of miles that can be the case. I see it on my car and I am about ready to do. It is job #05-213.

I use a bent bolt. The head is a perfect fit into the allen socket.

After an oil and filter change, I disconnect the coil wire and turn the engine over until the oil pressure reads 3 bar. I was advised by some very smart people on this forum and my local independent mb shop. It will avoid the absolutely scary noises encountered on start up.
