As with any car, proper maintenance is the key to longevity. And yes I know that the engine in the R129 from 1999 to 2002 is not the same as those in the earlier models. So, what is your mileage?

I have 58,000 on my 1993. Now experiencing some problems related to age (leaking power steering pump, some sort of problem, as yet undiagnosed, with the a/c) but nothing other than that except for normal wear items (tires, brake pads, etc.) Also had a "varmint" of some type eat through my brake line while the car was in winter storage, but that's not MB's fault!
