Need Selling Advice

Any advice on the best way to sell an SL?

I have a '72 450SL in good condition that I am advertising for about the middle of the price range from other current ads and less than the value in the NADA collector car guide. It has been listed for about 3 weeks in the collector car trader (online and print versions), craigslist, oursl, and the newsletter of the local Mercedes club. I have had no responses at all other than a few obvious scam emails.

Is there somewhere else that is more effective to advertise? Are older SLs just not selling well because of high gas prices? Is it just a matter of cutting the price until people start calling? Any other thoughts?

I looked at your oursl ad. The pictures are poor. Find a more attractive background like trees or flowers. Show more of the car. Better interior shot, soft top, engine, trunk, under carriage. Use all eight pictures. Correct the VIN. Describe the car, not production facts -everyone looking in your venues knows it's the first year of the 107, and they can see the chrome bumpers. You need to generate some excitement.

Personally, I think your price is on the moon for the mileage, and in your ad you would have to give me a reason to think otherwise. Mileage is a killer on these cars.

Have you tried eBay? Tons of people are on that site every day, and you need to get the car 'out there' as much as possible.

I agree with Chuck in that your pictures are a little weak. Get the car detailed to a showroom-like shine and get some high resolution pix showing off the car's highlights.

p.s. I don't think the car's exterior color helps. Try using a word other than 'brown' in your ads, i.e. Mahogany, Mocha, Coco, etc.

selling advice

Look at oursl.com

That site seems to specialize in classic SL's. Their prices are usually on the high side so your car may appear relatively attractive.

I agree with the previous posts in terms of image and wording.

You've got to get the model right too - no such thing as a 72 450SL. It's easy enough to explain that it's a 4.5.
