Steering box leak

I have a 1970 280sl, and was trying to adjust the play in the steering box. Well, it seems I can not adjust it with the threaded rod coming out the top of the steering box, but I did manage to have it start leaking fluid from the top.

There is a plate on the top that the threaded rod comes through. I can not tell how it is held in place. The plate rotates, but does not appear to be screwing in or out. There appears to be an o-ring seal that is leaking. Can someone give me advise as to what to do?

Thanks,
tom

The leak is from the plate under the nut

Thanks for the reply.

I have a nut, with a copper seal, and a cap that goes over that, which seals to the nut. My problem is that the plate that is under the nut is leaking at the edge of the plate. The plate is about 1.5 inches (37mm) diameter, and appears to set down into a recess in the top of the steering box.

Thanks, but not yet

This is a great description of a steering box rebuild. BUT, I don't see my problem spot. I did email the owner of the website to see if he could help.

Last weekend I replaced all tie rods and drag link on my 70 220D because of play in the steering. I thought there was play in the steering box also, but now after replacing everything, no play wait so ever. I am very happy with the results.
Now I need to fix the leak I have, I am staying tuned so maybe I can get my leak fixed also, if I can figure where it is leaking.

The leak if fixed!

I took my 280sl to my mechanic, and he unscrewed the top plate and replaced the o-ring. I think what he did was to hold the adjusting screw and use something like snap ring pliers to unscrew the plate. There are 2 recesses in the plate for this purpose.

The old o-ring had cracked. He didn't have an o-ring with a large diameter, but small material size, so he used what he had. He didn't even charge me!

The removed o-ring is made of about 2.5mm diameter material, and is about 40mm OD.

By the way, I see no difference in steering when I screw the "adjusting screw" or screw it out.
