560SL rear fog light

Has anyone retro fitted a rear fog light to a 1988 SL? I think I will have to buy a European light switch (with a rear fog setting), I was wondering if the wires are in place or do I have to run new ones to the existing rear light cluster. Finally, which part of the rear light cluster is a fog lamp located on a European spec SL?

Any help would be appreciated

I think the switch is okay, because on my '88 560sl, I can pull it out twice. The second stop would be for the rear fog lights. Whether the wires are there or not, I have no idea. I would guess they aren't.

Now, does anyone know if the orange dot in the middle of my light switch should light up?

The orange dot lights up when the rear fog light is turned on.

US spec Mercedees Benz cars for some reason (ask the DOT why!) of this vintage do NOT have rear foglights. The tail light socket where they would go is simply empty on them. No wires, nothing.

To retro fit one in, is one more thing on the list of US DOT mistakes for me to correct, on my Mercedes, and installing the Euro headlights was the first and most important, of thesethat I fixed.

The horrible sealed US beam headlight lobby, and corrupt congressmen that accepted their bribes, you can thank for that.

The headlight switches for US & Euro are the same. If you install a lamp in the middle of the switch, behind the amber lense, it will light up when the switch in pulled to the 2nd position. I don't believe there is rear foglight wiring, however, on the US models. On my 280E, I installed an extra brake lamp in the rear fog space of each lense. You can never have enough warning for the bonehead behind you who is out to ram you.

How about the W124 model. Is there a socket for the bulb in one of the rear taillamps?
