Seat belt to short

My recently acquired '96 SL600 has seat belts that are too short to be comfortable. I have sat in other MB sedans and their belts are longer. Is it possible that something has gone wrong with the automatic seatbelt tensioning system? Any thoughts on what could be the problem?

If it is only on the passenger side, it might be that the switch on the seat base, by the door, is set to "baby seat" mode.
