Instrument Panel Amber Warning Light Question?

I purchased a 1975 W107 280SL (Gray Market Car) for my daughter a few months ago and I do not as of yet have a manual for it. The car only has 86,000 miles on it and is in very good shape. Just the other day amber light came on the instrument panel. The light lights up a circle with three little dashed lines on the left and right side of the circle. My question is what is this light telling me? Thanks for your help.

John

Based on what you are describing, I suspect it is the brake pad sensors warning you that the pads need to be replaced.

Thanks for the reply. When I go to a place like Napa to get pads can I ask for pads for a 380 SL? Are the pads the same as a 380 or 450 SL? Every time I go to get parts for the car I run into the problem of the counter guy getting the car confused with the earlier 280SL, sense my car is a 1975 W107 280SL gray market car.

John,

Unfortunately I have "zero" experience with parts for a grey market car. The members of this forum have a huge amount of knowledge. Hopefully one of the more knowledgable members will chime in with suggestions.

Go to the "but parts" tab at the top of this page. Call Phil at the number listed and you'll be sure to get the right parts at a reasonable cost.

If the light is on, the sensor wire has been cut and will need to be replaced also. They're pretty cheap, just tell Phil what you have and he'll tell you what is needed.
I've had good luck (took some time) finding owner's manuals on line in pdf format.

Don't overlook that one of the sensor wires may be broken.

It's standard practice to replace the sensors along with the pads.

If you get a free Startek subscription, you can answer these questions about parts interchange yourself by looking up the 280 and the 380.

Question free subscription

Hello ctaylor, I went to the startekinfo site from your post. I couldn't find the free information. All I could find was $2950.00 for one year subscription down to $18.00 for 24 hr. subscription. Could you please direct me to the free subscription you were referring to? Thanks, 190e2.

Go to the link provided...on the left side frame, click subscribe....on page two it gives you the option of a 365 day subscription for free....

Also....you might want to try the tab at the top of this page to buy parts.....nothing wrong with supporting the forum sponsors as much as this site helps us out.

Also, consider Millermbz.com. They have been very helpful with me when I call them. Kevin is usually who I speak with or e-mail.

Last..if you know what you are looking for, I use getcoolparts.com for both the merc and the audi and have had great success.

If you replace the pads soon after the light comes on, you may not have to replace the sensor. I've reused mine even with a little flat spot ground on one side! Cheap, and it works. I'd bet 380 pads will work on it. Ned
