What Type Freon?

Phil Here, Well It's getting Hot down here in Fla. Time to hoist the Hard Top on the Sweet 500sl and crank up the A/C! My 1992 runs Cool to Cold air, I'm thinking to recharge the unit? Would anybody know what type of Freon should I use to top off my unit? My Mech. say's that I have a slight leak, but he would say that If i brought him in a New SLR.

I don't know If I can mix Freons, so help me with a suggestion?

Your mechanic should be able to answer that question.

Your car is probably r-12, but it could have been converted to r-134. The mechanic should be able to tell by looking at the re-charge low pressure fitting.

No, you can't mix. Some people will substitute "freeze 12" for r-12, but that will start another entire debate

Outside threaded fitting=R12
Inside threaded fitting (you have to unscrew the cap)=R134

The outside of the R134 fitting allows a quick disconnect hookup.

Phil,

The US delivered 1992 500 SLs, like ours were manufactured with R-134.
I believe that there were some manufactured with R-12 for european delivery.

There is a sticker on the radiator support that confirms this and specifies the capacities. You can unscrew the cap on a fitting and see that the outside of the fitting is designed for a clip-on hose fitting. The older R-12 fittings are threaded.

As far as I know, one brand of R-134 is as good as another.

I have mixed brands many times.
