82 380SL with power supply issue

Can anyone help with the starting point for finding where the power supply might be cut going to the idle control, temp gauge is also dead. I started working on this gal and found the idle valve necked-down with a piece of rubber hose/line someone cut and inserted. I think they were getting by with this shade tree fix. I want her back as she should be. I am trying to fine a easy read electrical diagram. Any help? She idles rough.

The over-voltage protection relay supplies power to the idle relay and the lambda computer. I think on an '82 it's the red ice-cube relay in the rack above the fuse panel.

Either an Alldatadiy subscription or the Mercedes 107 CD would have the wiring diagrams.

Hey Chuck,

Do you happen to know if the red, ice-cube style, over-voltage protection relays have the same tendency to fail as the fused type? Thanks

Dunno. I took one apart once, and there isn't much to fail.

Easy to test. Are you getting power to the idle relay?

Yes I am. But given the number of stories I've read about people stranded by failed protection relays, I was thinking about replacing the one on my 27 yr. old 380sl before it failed, or buying an extra one and keeping it in the trunk. OTOH, it seems like most, if not all, of those stories involved fused type relays. So, I was wondering if the fuseless type had the same failure rate as the fused type.

In any case, since the relay only costs about $60, and I already have the kink panel off, I just may go ahead and replace it anyway. Thanks for the concern, though.

I would by a fuel pump relay instead. Or use the money toward an idle valve or relay.

Pull the OVP out and see if the car will run. It should run a bit lean, and would have a high idle if your system was working.
