I had a hard time removing the top on my 83 500 sl this weekend. I found that is I rotated the knob about 85% of it's compacity it would pop the pin up. If I went all the way it would move the latch back over the pin and the top would not relase.

You mean the large handle, right?

Yes the large handle. Once you get the top off and look inside at the mechanism, you will see why this works.
