82 380SL - pls help ID this vacuum connector

Just beginning to learn my way around the SL after the 300SD.

Can anyone please tell me if this connector on top of the block should be plugged like this or if it should be connected to something? I have a flare shift problem on the tranny that sounds like a vac or modulator valve issue.

Thanks....

that appears correct , your flair probably is vacuum related . If you are just starting work on the 380, inspect all rubber and conections carefully, ANY leak can cause you grief. I also have an 82 380 parts car if you come upon something you need
Good luck

I have the same (1982 380SL) car you have. Here are a couple of pictures that may help you trace that vacuum line to it's intended connection. From the photos, it appears that the vacumm line in question runs down to the the intake manifold area.

That is supposed to be a 4-way connector. The connections should be:

- White side of green/white reducer
- Front connection on warm-up regulator
- Intake manifold lower chamber
- Blue (I think) side of blue/black reducer

You seem to be missing some of the pieces. Should not affect your shifting, that vacuum connection is a metal pipe at the back of the engine.

Thanks Timm9 and Chuck. The screw was a dead giveaway for me that this was a buggered up job courtesy of the previous owner. I am in the process of ordering an official shop manual which hopefully has all the diagrams for me to trace and repair the system.

MB Canada no longer sells the shop manuals - even on CD - for the 1980's cars so one has to order from a US supplier. Takes some time.
