107--New tires--what a difference!
Had the 560SL for five years and never did anything about the Michelin Symmetry tires the PO had misguidedly just put on before selling, but I always thought the suspension needed rebuilding--very harsh, hard ride. Went for new Michelins; the Primacy MXV4 in H rating was the target, but due to availablilty consented to try the Harmony instead. The Harmony was much better on ride but squishy in handling; finally got the Primacy rubber put on and can't recommend it highly enough!
The car rides as it ought and the handling response I consider excellent; all of a sudden it feels like a Mercedes at 170K miles! Harshness gone, sense of carved-out-of-one-ingot solidity back, drives as it ought. Thanks to Luke for the recommendation! Unless you need ultimately crisp steering and will settle for a harsher ride, it seems to be the way to go.

I had the same things when I switched from the PO's horrible choice of Bridgestones to my current tire. On my lexus Im running Michlin Pilot Exalto's and I am 100% satisfied after 10 months.

Ive always been a Michelin man. But these days I just cant justify the cost. This year I went with Goodyear Eagles. Much better over the previous Kumhos. But Kumhos is the best deal tire per dollar. The Kumhos only lasted 40,000 miles but were 1/3rd the price.

New Rubber
Phil Here, I also went for new tires on my SL, I took off BridgeStone directional Potanz's 245/45-17's. I replaced them with Falkens 235/50-17.
The new rubber is 1/2" taller and 1/2" slimmer. What a difference! My SL. rides like a Million Bucks. Those directional tires were a little "Freaky" in the handling department. My new rubber can be rotated for ware and my ride is a slight bit softer. I'm Happy. 1992 Sweet 500SL Phil Justice ps. Ron, thanks for the Head Lamp Switch deal. |

Now that you have that new softer ride from new tires may I suggest that you find and Indy that is willing to adjust the sterring box, if there is no fluid leaking. I had mine done for about $85.00 and man what a difference. Most of the old sterring wheel play went away and the car drove like new. Be carefull most Technicians will want to sell you on a new sterring box but that's not needed if it's not leaking. But a smart Tech will want to have the car delivered the night before so that he can work on it in the morning when the exhaust is cool so as not to burn himself.
