SL300 1993 Electric hood problem.

Hello All, the car is an early 1993 (January 1993) SL300. The soft top mechanism seems to have got out of synch. and would not release the hard top. We removed the top manually and reset the fault codes (jumpered pin 1 to 10, etc). The code was 17 (door switch I think) but I suspect that this was not the actual fault as the door windows all work in the correct sequence). The soft top now goes up and down, but will not lock up, that is the red light will not go out. It does lock down and all lights go out. If I cycle the switch forward a couple of times it will go out but comes on after a few minutes. The mechanism has rarely been used and is in 'as new' condition so I'm reluctant to tear into it without some advice.....

Thanks in advance for your help on this.

John Marshall.

You might want to do a search, or post this issue, on the 129 forum on benzworld. There is a lot more information about top problems there.

It will be interesting to see what they say on Benzworld. My opinion based on alldata for a later 129 is that the problem is in your right soft top bow switch (A23s2). The control module wants to see 0 volts (switch open) when "up" and locked and is probably seeing battery voltage (switch closed).

The switch is in the right side of the trunk. A not very good picture is attached.

I'm not sure of this diagnosis, but it should be easy enough to check without disturbing anything.

Good luck.

John, the problem could very well be a limit switch. May I suggest that you reset the codes several times to determine if you get the same fault. If so then you may need to replace the door limit switch. But by all means please come over to BenzWorld and read R129 soft top 'Controller' ultimate thread
