Buying Advice for 380SL

I am looking to buy a 380 or 300 SL . What are some of the most expensive and or persistent issues with these models? What is a good price range, and what kind of fuel mileage can I expect.

Thanks,

Why such a narrow field of R107s?

The only persistent issue I notice is:

Timing chain servicing every 100k (most of the cars for sale have not had this done and are ticking bombs)

Other than that they are pretty much like shopping for diesels. records, records, records.

Fuel economy?:( Why bother worrying about that unless its a daily driver?

Possum- My '84 380SL routinely gets 22-23 mpg at 75 mph (or higher), on the road. I've had to deal the "high idle hell", and a broken door check (an easy fix if you know the secret), changed out the brake pads, fluids, filters, etc. Clock stopped working after I bought it! Problems can be the idle control system, leaking vacuum system, and the fresh air/air conditioning system. The a/c is, I'm told, a very expensive fix, but I don't know for certain. Next project for mine is redoing the rear suspension. Check the car out closely before you buy. Good luck, Ned.

81-83 = single row timing chain = bad
84 above = double =better choice

If you search there is some helpful advice under my postings as I bought a 1982 380SL in Michigan earlier this year.

Things to look for

- timing chain condition (mine was upgraded to double row)
- rust, especially in wheel wells and around jacking points
- subframes, suspension and steering bushings, engine mounts etc
- correct operation of cables and linkages to control convertible top

This is of course in addition to general condition, engine and transmission operation and so on.
