Thinking about buying an SL500
Its the Standard one, silver all the regular stuff i guess. It's a 99' with around 55K on it. What are some trouble spots with this car? is it easy/hard to repair? parts costs? what kind of fuel milage should i expect? i know i know V8 and im asking about MPG, but i've been reading where people are getting 25mpg on the highway.
thanks guys

I think 25 hwy mpg is a tad on the high side in the real world, but that 22-23mpg is possible in flat Illinois. But dude, you don't buy an SL500 for the gas mileage. These cars are every bit as electronically complex as any brand of contempory vehicle, so many repairs require special diagnostic computers. ( read that as no-way in the drive way repairs ). The 99 was built during the Chrysler years and may not be as reliable as the latest models, but overall, it's still an exceptionallly well made reliable car; particularly if it's been maintained properly. The late 129's don't have any rust issues. Cost of maintenance is on a par with other luxury vehicles from Japan or Germany. If you want a cheap to own, mundane, high mpg car, buy a Camery. If you want a remarkable driving experience, buy an SL.

Poor Chrysler - it still gets blamed for everything. That car may or may not have been built after the 9/98 merger but Mercedes was deeply profoundly committed to cheapening their products well before Chrysler came into the picture. It turns out 1999 was a bad year for new German motors. For both Porsche 911s and Mercedes SLs the 1999 versions are worth less than the pre-99s with the prior generation motor.

I think you'd be much happier with a R107 500SL euro. You already have the modern car, why not have the fastest production model of that era that compliments your 240D... one of the slowest production models.
