I need new lug bolts, help pls!

Hi guys,

so, my '80 SL has the standard Chrome rims (or so I thought), 14". However, the lug bolts are dug in deep down inside, and are practically invisible, leaving the rims each with 5 black holes.

On pictures I see bolts that end with the rim, looking nice. However, my bolts only measure about 2cm from the collar down. So I guess I'd need bolts that have a 3cm neck from the collar to the head?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks,

Franz

P.S.: The dealer couldnt find any of those bolts.

lug bolts

Performance Products has the chrome plated extended lug bolts you probably need. The also offer chrome lug bolt covers that may work for you. The lug bolts also appear on ebay from time to time.

Well, I guess the optimum would be 20, 5 per wheel.

I already got the lug bolt covers xD, just to figure out that you need the long bolts for them to really work. Thats the first time I realized that SLs on other pics have long bolts.

I've seen a bunch of the long bolts on ebay (Austria, thats where I live). The problem is, they all have the head, then a neck, the neck ends with a collar, and then from the collar down theres another neck down till the thread starts (the round twisty thing is called thread, right? ^^).

My bolts look like this :

and the only long ones I can find look like this:
Or at least they all kinda look like that.

So, do you think they could possibly fit/ how couild I find out? Take off one of my wheels and look? :S

Thanks guys

Franz

First, which rims do you have? The convoluted/bundt or 560 SL / 15 hole wheels. The bottom bolt pictured is for the latter.

I'm going to guess the convoluted wheel since it's 14". However, I still can't visualize your problem. Can you take a pic and post?

To view just about every bolt configuration out there go to Ebay and type Mercedes +lug bolts into the search box.

My rims look like this, 14" and chrome . And my lug bolts are the small ones from above.

And my question is: On ebay I only see the two kinds of screws, of which I posted pics from above. Given that my "thread", or at least the length of the screw, from the collar down is so short, im scared that the long ones, which are also way longer from the collar down, will be too long, and break my brakes? Thanks,

Franz

P.S.: The "problem" I have, is that with the small screws, the black holes remain: the rims on my car look JUST like the ones from ove- the bolts are practically invisible, cuz theyre so short.

OK, those are similar to the 560 SL wheels. However, the 560 wheels are 15". The bolts I used on my wheels looked exactly like the bolt pic you posted with the lengthened shoulder. You may want to measure how much thread you have below the ball seat. Then compare against what is available.

FWIW, I put the 15" 560 SL wheels on my '85 380. I don't know if there's a difference in the lug bolt length.

well, just from looking at it I can see that the thread is longer. How can I test if they could still fit? Can I see it if I take my wheel off?

I believe the Ebay offerings have the threaded length listed.
See if your local hardware store carries bolts of the same size/thread...or longer. Use the test bolt to measure the depth available.

The only model that used 14" flat faced 15 hole wheels was the W201 190 series up to mid year 1985.

Perhaps those are the lug bolts you need.

MB discontinued the use of the very long, "two headed" wheel bolts. They were snapping apart inside the lug holes, probably when over torqued. The replacement bolt is a the same length, but has a very long 17mm head section.

Cool, so the wheels aren't stock- just as I figured.

So does Mercedes still sell "long" bolts?

And, like I said, my thread is only 2cm long. Could my wheels take a 4cm thread?

The threaded length is 39mm. I would avoid buying the long shank bolts per your photo drawing above. The shoulder does break when it is over torqued.

These may work for you

From Performance Products
performanceproducts,com

also: The key to not breaking the extended bolts by overtorquing is ... don't overtorque them. A torque wrench (or torquestick) should always be used on any whell bolt/nut on any car.
