Shrieking brakes
Ok, under light to medium heavy braking, the brakes make an ear-piercing squeal. Is this normal? Do other SLs of this vintage do this?

Has brake grease been applied to the backside of the shims?

If you have four piston calipers then they are prone to squeal, whatever type you have. Can be a real pain trying to cure it

No. Proper MB pads on MB rotors should not squeal. As well, the caliper pistons need to be correctly aligned. If someone has been fiddling around, or a caliper was replaced in the past that is another place to look. Also, brake paste applied to the back of the pads...also available at MB.

Depending on the car. Some have a spring that keeps the caliper from moving when the brakes are applied. Rotor thickness dictates whether the rotors need to be replaced.

If so...I don't see the relevance. Rotor thickness, warping ,glazing or poor quality dictates whether rotors need to be replaced.
