560SL driver door lock
I did an exhaustive search for this specific problem. I really did.
My car is a 1988 560SL. The vacuum locking system works in lock and unlock. Both doors, the trunk and the gas door lock and unlock from the passenger door and the trunk when using the key. The driver door key lock WILL NOT activate the vacuum locks nor will it mechanically lock and unlock the door. The driver door lock will control the alarm. I have removed the driver door handle and lock assembly, inspected, cleaned and lubricated it. While the handle was out, inserting the key and turning it through it's range, it seems to work o.k. Still not working. The key seems to have less resistance when turning it than the passenger door lock. I don't think I have a vacuum problem since all locks work when activated from somewhere other than the driver door. What am I missing? |

It's likely an electrical issue. Check that when you turn the key on the driver door that the vacuum motor / pump runs. I'm not familiar with your particular vehicle, but in general, there is a set of contacts associated with the key lock which activate the pump.

If I read your original post correctly, turning the key in the drivers door doesn't lock the drivers door?
Keeping in mind that there is some differences between your car and my 380sl, it seems to me that the problem is mechanical in the lock or lock linkage. Best I can recall on all models, the regular (not valet) key will lock/unlock the individual door & trunk locks regardless of the vacuum system operation. I'd check the key lock and linkage again, and disassemble the passenger door if necessary to compare parts location and operation. |

Look at the two small round springs at the end of the locking rod. There is a slot where the rod can slide up and down. These springs keep the rod at the top or bottom of the slot. If one of them is broken, you will have the problem you have. Panel will have to be removed to see. I have been down this road before. I hate springs.
