w129 tires only

As many of us I have tire questions. I tried the tire section and i searched tires here. So many different models with all kinds of different questions I thought Id start a 129 only thread so those of us with the 129 can narrow it down and read relevant material. (assuming that all the 129's are similar enough to have similar tire issues.)

I saw the tire calculator but it requires the tire your going to which I dont know.

I currently have 225 55 16. Id like to go a bit fatter. maybe 50's? But I dont know what the limit is. Im sticking with 16 until I have the coin to spring for some decent rims.

How wide can I go and should I?

I hope this helps in organization and fellow 129'ers.

Pete, I think you're getting into a rut, man. Did you realize that Benzes come in colors other than silver?

Starting in 1997 the R129 came with what is known as the optional Sport package. The tires and rims were sized as follows. Please keep in mind that the inner fenders may need to be rolled 110 degrees like the factory Sport option '774 Shell modification for AMG-wheels' in order for the wider size tires not to rub.

245/40ZR18 front and 275/35ZR18 rear, low profile high-performance tires
8.5Jx18" front and 9.5Jx18" rear, staggered-width AMG I 5-spoke monoblock alloy wheels
Front offset 25 mm & Rear offset 23 mm, with 5x112 mm bolt pattern
