Exhaust Volume/Tone (early R107)

Hey Guys,

I'm prep-ing to get a stainless set-up on my euro '72 350SL.

How loud are the M116/117 engines w/o the center muffler (107106)? Would it have a better tone/good bark? Or would it just be LOUD?

Would it help the car breathe any better?

My experience is that the center muffler on an MB doesn't quiet the exhaust much, but that experience is mostly on inline 6's. (Like my M103 that just dropped the rear muffler & sounds like it's running straight pipes.)

Thanks!

-Matthew-

The center is the flow thru muffler so it really wont change it much, the rear has a loop in it to quiet everything down. Why not ask the Timevalve people, they gave me a quote to do the whole system in 2" pipe including swapping the stock mufflers for 2x 2" straight thru mufflers that are the same dimensions as original so it will hang perfectly.

Never got the system because i was happy with a standard steel exhaust system and the shipping to Aus would have cost more then the exhaust system itself.

My current exhaust is 2x 2" pipe with resonators in each pipe joining to a single 3" pipe with a straight thru muffler and spiral pipe to remove the drone. Sounds good Now all i need to do is sort out a set of extractors and downpipes.

Timevalve is actually who I'm talking to about the set-up. They're cheaper than a factory system & they have a life-time warranty. Add in the option to tweak the sound/flow how I'd like & it sounds great to me (no pun intended).

I took out the center muffler (resonator) out of my old 107 and it sounded sweet. Sounded more like a old jag. No hassles on noise from neighbors or cops.

I cut the resonators out of my SEC and didn't really notice much difference in the sound. It might be slightly deeper-sounding, but not too much.

My local muffler shop, which specializes in custom systems, recommended and put together the following system for my 280. We used the stock 1.75 headers (ceramic coated) and downpipes to a crossover where the center muffler had been, then 2.25's back too a Flowmaster dual in/dual out muffler mounted where the resonator had been.
It was a little tinny sounding so we wrapped everything with muffler insulation tape (helps with cabin heat problems also). Now sounds like a Mustang GT, not everyones taste I know but what I was looking for. Probably should have gone ahead with the collector box but costs got in the way.
For anyone interested I paid $150.00 for the muffler and $350 for the installation.

I put a flow through muffler AND resonator. It took a couple of tries to get the right resonator that suited my ears.
