'84 380sl Ignition Key Cylinder Removal

I ordered a new ignition key cylinder with keys matched to my vin number as the original was replaced with a used unit and original keys did not fit - Does anyone know the correct procedure for removing the lock cylinder? I heard that you turn the key to the first position and insert a paperclip/small wire in the little opening provided and it slides right out. Is this correct? Thank you!

best,

James

well it is easier said than done. I fussed with my 84 for days, and finnaly popped into the dealers and they had it out in a flash
but yes you turn to , I believe number 2 position and push in detent via a strong wire or some such. and pull straight out
I can look for my detailed instructions if you get stuck ( no pun intended)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H2kAIA2-sZ8, this is an 80 but if you have the collar this is the way.

without collar ( form manual)
Turn lock cylinder to position "1".
Press release wire into holes and release safety catches by overcoming resistance of spring.
Remove lock cylinder steering wheel lock together with cover Pull release wire out of lock cylinderturn ignition key to position "0" and remove.
Remove lock cylinder from cover When installing in steering wheel lock turn lock cylinder to position "1", the high spot on the lock cylinder must engage in the groove in the steering wheel lock.
Slide cover on so that recess points to left and ignition key is positioned on center mark on cover. Press lock cylinder and cover into steering wheel lock so that cover catches.
Check lock cylinder for proper function.

Thanks, worked like a dream! Nice to have a tight new ignition cylinder and 3 keys versus one key ready to break!
