110 Valve adjustment

My 1985 280SL Euro has 55K on it now. It has the straight six 110 engine. The valves on this engine are somewhat noisy and I've been told by most "experts" that this is normal. Question is: how often (in miles) should the valves be adjusted for this engine? Thanks , Desert

Every 15K or once a year. Its normal to hear the valves on a M110.

With 55k miles it would benefit from adjustment. There are several methods to adjust valves on the 110 engine. One is replacing the shims which comes on 3 different sizes 2.5mm 3.5mm 4.5mm and another is to adjust the ball pin. If you decide to adjust or replace it would be wise to change the cover gasket and the timing chain at the same time.

You would need this valve pin tool.

Hope this helps

i adjusted my valves every 10k on my m110 ~~~ the m110 was the easiest of any mercedes to adjust, i used a hazet wrench @12" long, double offset 17mm

the above picture looks like a v8 adjusting tool

A good thick crowfoot wrench and a short extension will work if the adjusters are not too hard to turn. They are very soft metal and easy to "round" if the wrench slips, so be sure to keep the wrench on squarely. Many times, I have had to remove the rocker arm and put a socket on the adjuster. More than once I have had to use my 18" ratchet with a 2 foot pipe extenstion to get a really stubborn one to turn.

You can also go a bit tighter on the clearances - maybe 10% - to reduce the noise.
