Removing Rear Discs on 86 560SL

Hoping someone can help on this one.

I tried to remove my rear discs on my SL a few months ago and could not get them loose. It appeared that once the wheel was off and the caliper removed with the emergency brake off, that it should just pull off. I tried a puller using slight pressure and light raps with a plastic hammer with no movement. I ended up giving up before I warped the disc.

Is there a trick to taking them off?

You will probably need to tighten the star wheel in order to get them off, and then you MUST readjust the emergency brakes after installation of the new disks. The star wheels spin in opposite directions to tighten/loosen depending on what side of the car you are on. There is a certain number of clicks of the emergency brake pedal that the car should be immobilized, the spec is in the manual, but I don't know what it is off of the top of my head.

I agree with Strife, having done this recently to replace my rear rotors. The emergency brake shoes (even relaxed) can "lock" the rotor. Mine was also rusty where the rotor contacted the axle hub.

S.M. 42-540 specs that the pedal should affect the parking brake by the second or third click of the six steps available on the ratchet.

Get yer flashlight out, as it's a PITA to figure out where the star is located and which way to turn it.

Light pressure and taps aren't going to free it. Get out a good-sized rubber mallet and whack it from the back.

Be sure you wear a good dust mask when you do this.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to give it a shot this weekend.
