SLC Windshield

Has anyone tried replacing an SLC windshield with a new aftermarket one? I have called a few suppliers and they all say that the front glass is not available or dealer only.

Does it have to be new??

You might try calling this fellow in Oakland CA.He might either have or be able to locate an NOS one for you.He would surely have a good used one.He is one of the largest Mercedes only wreckers in California.

Thanks

The glass in my car is actually quite fine. New windsheilds installed typically cost about $200 so I thought I could take advantage of that price and replace the glass and the seal. I only need a new seal but as i'm going to have to drag a pro out to do the work, i thought i would get glass also.

All the best

AL

AL, Wow, I am stunned that they do not have the SLC, I will try my other source.

bwostosh 03-13-2009 02:01 PM

Al, I have located one 450SLC windshield (have not physically eyeballed it tho) here in San Diego, $180.

Brian

Pilkington does not have it and no one lists a gasket for it. So I suspect that the glass is glued on. If so, I can re-glue mine as there is nothing wrong with it. I'm just worried I will break it when trying to re-install it.

Is your glass new?

Thanks!

bwostosh 03-13-2009 03:16 PM

Al,
new, glue-in, less chance of breaking, We have done SL's. The problem and time burner is cleaning before installation, I am getting approval from friend before purchasing. Bye the way his SLC is a 90K, DB904 with blue leather interior. beautiful car.
The glass wholesaler, (Mygrant Glass, Chula Vista, ca) has glass from china, south africa, and other places. I have to go thru another man since I do not do enough wholesale volume. I went to the warehouse once for a pick-up and was impressed.

The original SLC front seal is butyl. To remove it, there is a wire in the seal that you hook up to a 12 volt battery after removing the anodized aluminum trim. The butyl gets hot and soft and eventually the window can be pushed out.
I'm not sure if this original seal is still available. Most people probably instead use urethane and glue the windshield back in (probably the better choice).
