Looking at a 1995 SL600
A friend of a friend has one for sale for $9-10,000. 75,000 miles but I don't know much about the maintenance history. Its in good shape. What do you think? What are the major failures on these little beauties. No need to be gentle - I have a 1997 BMW 740iL that I maintain myself (best friend has a lift). The e38 has 251,000 on it and when I turn off the traction control and power brake it a little it will break the back tires loose.

The V12 is supposed to be crazy expensive to maintain, and insanely expensive to repair. In addition, nothing on those R129s is cheap. So, if have a good $3000-$4000 a year to spend on maintenance, get it.

I have a '94 500SL and it's a bag of money to keep it up. the big thing I know of is the original wiring harnesses being crap. They begin to crumble due to the engine heat. This happened to mine and it's going to cost +-$1k to fix, depending on what I can do myself and what assy are done.
If you have to go to the Stealer or even an Indy for repairs it's going to be a bag of money every time. Be prepared to not do everything yourself. I have owned and personally maintained BMW's, Volvos and numerous american cars, and I can tell you that these are really different - high engineered. |
