I want a better exhaust...

Ok folks...I have a 1987 560sl and would like a less restrictive exhaust that idles quietly, like stock, but will open up on a hard run up.

Due to regulations in Utah, I still need to keep cats on it, but would like something better than stock.

Any suggestions?

Also...what about dual exhaust?

Admittedly, I have yet to get underneath my car, so I don't know if it would work or not

I've always been a fan of Flowmaster, but I'm not sure if they make an exhaust for your application.

Take the cats off and ream them out with a broomstick, then reinstall. Wait, that's illegal, nevermind

I have FM40 in the Dakota, and FM50 in the Durango...both great mufflers. I also have the old style Thrush in in the F250, but will change to FM40 soon.

I'd have to check to see if they make it for the MB, but I have low hopes. I couldn't find where anyone had done the same to theirs on here.

look on you-tube

I remember seeing/hearing a video of a 107 chassis SL with 40 series flowmasters on it.It was REALLY loud, more like a hopped up mustang or
camaro.
On my early 450,there isn't a lot of room for a full dual exhaust. The stock pipes are around 2",going into a Y before the rear muffler. You would probably be better of removing any resonator or pre muffler and going with a free flow muffler of some sort at the rear.
I also doubt you will see much of a "power increase",but could certainly give the car a more "agressive" tone.
Any competent muffler shop should be able to do this.

Why not just hang a fart can on it, and then it will sound just like a similarly equipped Honda Civic?

Seriously, I like the the way the stock exhaust sounds, and I don't think you'd see any improvement in performance. And please, leave the cats in place - we all have to breathe.

You might want to consider a Timevalve muffler: http://www.timevalve.com/

I put one on my 380SL and am quite happy with it -- a little louder than stock, but a subtly aggressive timbre.

Stainless steel, high quality, reasonably priced -- oughta last forever.

Monza makes a great replacement. Looks hot with the dual flange tips and sounds like a real powerhouse. Not like a Civic. I got one when I was faced with a 400+ muffler replacement.
