85 mercedes 380sl problem with head gasket?
Hi everyone,
I recently moved to san diego and are now look for a shop with reasonable pricing. I suspect that my head gasket is on its way to die. My car stalled a couple of times within the 1st mile and I see white smoke coming out of the exhaust when I push the gas paddle down. Mostly i see temperature rising to 100°C in the beginning before going down to about 85°C for the rest of my drive. any suggestions would be highly welcome and if you know how much $$ I probably i have to put down. thanks for your help in advance |

Do not panic about the action of the temperature gauge and the thermostat. This behavior appears to be "normal" with the 116 (380) engine, due to the way that the thermostat works. Now, if it stays at or over 100, or goes above that, that's another story.
I would not go to a shop and tell them you suspect a head gasket, because if you do then that is what it will be

Second that. There are a lot of things that can make a 380 run poorly during warm-up.
WRT your suspsicions about a head gasket: Are you losing coolant? Is there oil in the coolant?

I would tend to agree. The white smoke could simply be condensation from a cold exhaust. Especially in an area with high humidity. As long as it doesn't continue once it warms up. No coolant loss, no coolant in oil or oil in coolant probably is not a head gasket. Pull your plugs and read them. Change coolant and oil. Do it yourself and you can see obvious problems.
