500SLC on E-bay - NOT

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320390522171

Here is the message I sent to the seller. We'll see what happens.

What you have is a 450SLC. The VIN shows it. 450SLC's have 107024; 500SLC's have 107026. The next number "1" means it is a left hand drive. After that is the "2" which means it is an automatic. Finally, the last 6 numbers represent the next one off the line, i.e., you have 450SLC number 26,667. Mercedes did not even make that many 500SLCs. On the bright side, it is a European model - you can tell by the bumpers - and that generally gives you a slight premium. But the down side to that is the odometer is not original, because it would be in kilometers only, and unless you have some other documentation then the mileage is unknown.

I trust you will correct your listing after verifying what I have written here.

Good luck with your sale.

Good response to this travesty. I wondered why the 500 SLC was askew. Wheels are nice. Probably a Flintstone car.

At least it has a "Silver Bullet" title.

Question what is original then?

Hi

Mm, the headlights are US spec though (not Euro) and the boot ( sorry trunk!) badge is obvoiusly off a real 500SLC so perhaps the trunk lid is as well, could this be a "parts car" made up of the chassis from a Euro 450slc and other parts off a 500SLC - plus what else !

Could be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle!

Cheers

Jim

Did the Euro models have climate control? My '81 280SL Euro has air but the system is manual like my '73. Lever operated, no dial and buttons.

It was an expensive option on some cars. I have owned two real 500SLC's with the automatic climate control units.

On one of them , that and orthopedic seats were the only option. The car had no sunroof, manual crank windows and cloth interior.

I thought about making it a racer.

Thumbs up

Further to Pwogaman, I sent following message to seller:-

"Dear loganvilleauto,

Actually you are looking at a standard 450SLC and not a 500SLC. The VIN number 107024 is a 450SLC cast iron engine, the 107026 are 500SLC. The 500 has engine, trunk and hood lids in aluminium and yours are rusting indicating standard steel metal of the 450SLC. Only 1,615 500 were ever built and your vin production number clearly indicates at 450SLC. Hope you will revise your listing as it is misleading. Best regards"

Seller replied straight away with this message:-

"When we purchased the Mercedes, we understood it to be a 500 SLC. Will have to do more research and review the title again. Thank you"

The winning bidder will be disappointed when he finds out it is a standard 450SLC.

Well spotted Pwogaman!

Well, the seller finally relented and made followig clarification but could not change title of listing as it had 2 bids. I think it was a honest mistake and had no clue as to these type of cars. Who knows!!

On Jul-01-09 at 17:07:03 PDT, seller added the following information:

Sorry for the confusion

We have been informed by other ebay veiwers that this is a 450sl not a 500 we were going by the decal on the car

the title does not give a clear description of the 450 or 500 we just got this car in and have no history on the vehicile

This vehicile as stated in the description will need some work to be a daily driver

this is not a mint condition car it is how ever 30 yrs old has no reserve and a starting price of 1500.00

It will make a fun car to restore or just do the repairs and sport arond in her She does start right up and the tranny pulls fine

Thanks for looking and good luck Bidding
