Convertable top latch cables

Can someone please explain the function of the short cable that connects from the center lever to the latch mechanism??
Mine broke off at the end closest to the lever.I got another cable from a 1980 450SL (mine's a 1974) and it broke off in the same place the first time I tried to lock down the top after I installed it.
I can see it's supposed to pull the latch sideways to release the pin but my top releases fine without it in place, maybe even easier than before it broke.
I'm sure I must be doing something wrong but what I have no idea??
I think a PO might have replaced this as I found a part number tag wrapped around the center of the original cable.I routed and connected it the same way I found it which must be wrong if it's breaking.
I'd like to figure out what is wrong before I fork out $$$ for a new one
Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!

you are correct , it simply move the latch sideways to release, particullary important with the hard top , less so than the soft top, perhaps because the soft top has some tension in it and when released it pops past the latch. I have the shop manual that give the procedure for adjustment. I am out of town a few days and I can get it to you next week if no one else comes through.
