Thumbs down 6 cylinder 107

Which of the 6 cylinder engines used in the 107's is better, the 280 or the 300?

280 or 300

The (Euro) 300 engine is better than the 280 - newer design -lighter - more power - more reliable.

cheers

The 280 ran up to 85, the 300 was used to end of production.

In addition to the engines, this was a breakpoint in production that upgraded a lot of the features of the R107.

So, the 300 is the better car for many reasons, the engine being just one of them.

Problem is, the grey market cratered at this same time, so you're much more likely to find a 280 versus a 300.

That being said, my 84 280SL is still a pretty nice car.
Rust and condition should dictate your choice.

In my decade+ of haunting the web for manual SLs and/or parts, I've found more than a dozen 350SL 4spd's (& bought one of 'em), tons of 280SL sticks, and only a handful of 300SL 5spd's. The '86-'89 300SL is one of the hardest MBs of that era to find (AMGs not-withstanding).

I would have a very very very very hard time not adding a 300SL to my stable if I found one in decent condition w/ virtually any known history. (Even though I really need to get rid of one first... )

In what way is the 300 more reliable than the 280?

I had a 81 280 SL that was grey market-but brought to US specs in California. It was a great runner- I also had a 1973 280 C and it had the idenical engine...little boggy staring off the line- but she sure held some high revs at speed...Funny when i got the SL I was told to watch out as the Engine was hard to find parts for..but I will always remember the great drive out I-10 to Palm Springs every weekend. It really has its own personality...I loved that engine....
