Recharge AC Procedure

Recently purchased a 300SL that sat for a few years. Ac worked fine but litlle by little it is blowing warm air and compressor not engaging which I believe is low freon. It is an R12 system and I have some R12the old owner gave me. How do I recharge the system. I have bought the hose and fittings. Lust looking for the procedure.

Sweating like hell in Florida

Thanks

First loc the main line at the front of the (right) and un cap the cap- start the engine-turn on the ac and then connect your connector and fill- hopefully the system will hold it..you can feel the cold ac when you check while running....

Well wait a second! if it's slowly getting warmer , then you may have a leak. I would suggest that you put some gauges on it and test the system. High side should be around 250 and low side should be around 40.

If the system is empty, perform a vac and check if the system holds a vac for at least 30 minutes. If it does, the go ahead and charge the system.

Suggest borrowing a AC system vacuum pump and doing a thorough system evacuation to establish the system is tight and free of air/moisture. If it holds vacuum...29.9" for at least an hour, you should partially charge half a 12oz. can into the system and then use a sniffer to check for leaks not revealed by the vacuum test. If the system passes this test you should be able to recharge the system with the rest of the freon (1kg total charge weight) and be good to go. Don't forget to replenish the compressor oil as well. Much of it will have leaked out along with the freon.
