Factory recommended idle preset?
Does anyone here have any info on the preset for the Idle on a 1980 450sl
with the Bosch k-jet. I know that I have the air fuel ratio set to get it to start and run, but it smells like it's running very rich. When I try to lean it out (turning the screw counter clockwise) it dies before it is lean enough to not smell it or within a few minutes after. I know there is an idle screw near the front of the engine (big white screw cap with a spring under it.) I can adjust it and get the car to run again but when I do it's time to start over again with the air fuel mixture. At one point I had it running at such a slow idle speed the oil pressure was adversely effected. (the oil pressure needle was bouncing between 1 and 2 with the lope of the idle and it idled at around 350 rpm) needless to say I corrected this very quickly so as not to damage the engine. I know I've read here some where that the idle should be around 700-800 range? I guess I'm just looking for confirmation from some one who tunes these things often enough to know where my start point should be. Is there a preset for both points (Idle Screw and Air/Fuel screw) that is recommended as a start point to get this adjusted correctly? Last edited by panzerwagen80; 11-25-2009 at 01:46 PM. |

The CD says hot idle should be 650 RPM plus or minus 50. The CO should be .5-1.5%. The idle speed is set first.
