My 300 SL
I just took my longest trip yet in my 1990 300 SL. Went from NJ to Florida and back, a bit over 2500 miles. The SL delivered 25.22 mpg in highway driving and hardly used enough oil to register on the dip stick. I just finished washing and polishing the bugs off and it's time for the hardtop and sheepskins.

Nice!
My Dad drove from Toronto to Montreal and Back a few weeks ago. He said his SL500 was more than fine . BTW, I'm new here so hi everybody. Here's a pic of our SL for your enjoyment. Its a 1997 SL500R bought straight from the showroom at a dealership near Windser, Ont. We also have the hardtop on and it looks pretty good. I gotta get a digicam soon though. http://www3.sympatico.ca/sothy/SL500.jpg - Arju |

Bob...any modding plans for the 90 300SL? I have heard that there is a lot you can do to the 90 R129 .
I never drove long distances with my 90 300SL...yet...greetingz,

Mbenz,
"I have heard that there is a lot you can do to the 90 R129" Does that hold true for the 500 as well (other than the complete remodeling you did- hehe) and what are they? One very easy & cheep mode I made was to remove the plastic peice that blocks the air intake. Just open the hood and on the inside of the lights you should see what I mean. A little duck tape (the wide silver stuff) worked nice to redirect the air flow into the ductwork. Don't know if it made a difference but with the (noisy) hard top on you sure can go fast....

Mbenz,
I wish I had the talent /and or the money to make some of the changes you did. I'm fortunate that my SL is in really great condition, so my only improvements so far have been to replace the Becker radio with a Blaupunkt (Sydney 126) and a 10 disc CD changer. along with new floormats and new Pirelli tires. My wish list would include modernizing the front and rear bumpers and perhaps switching to European headlights. Bob

I am impressed with MBenz's conversions as well!
As I stated on another thread, the SL is technically my wife's car, so about the only modifications I get to do on her car are fuses and fluids (i.e. routine maintenance).
