ATF type '98 SL500 722.620 Trans

I want to change the ATF & filter on this car and the service manual shows quite a restricted list of lubricants.

There are two specs sheets that are called out: 236.10 & 236.12.

The first shows only a MBZ type 3353 P/N: A 001 989 4503.

The second shows the MBZ type 3353 plus a Fuchs & a Shell product, both with this type 3353.

What's the story on this type 3353 ATF? I've never heard that one before?

Any replies or suggestions are appreciated.

MB ATF Spec Sheet

Take a look at this... http://benzguide.com/index.php?title=Approved_Mercedes_Transmission_Fluid

At the bottom of the page, the recommended 722.6 ATF is covered in the small print-

I used Redline D6 ATF

MB keeps changing the specs on this stuff. MB had superceded the ATF to some newer P/N; the dealer now wanted $24/liter; OUCH!

I scoured the internet for ATF that would satisfy the MB 236.12 spec sheet and eventually found this D6 Redline product at a little under $11/qt. Excellent products from Redline who make racing synthetics.

As best as I could ascertain, the late MB ATF specs require a full synthetic with a very tight viscosity tolerance over temperature.

9 qts to change; dropping pan & replacing filter.
