1997 SL500 Trunk Issue

My trunk lid suddendly stopped staying up while opened. I know that there are struts as well as a pneumatic system back there. Any suggestions as to where to start?

There are pneumatic struts on each side

These are very much like all cars these days with these struts.

These are self-contained units and are not part of the hydraulic actuators associated with the soft top.

I understand about the struts

I understand about the struts, but I was also told that there is a pneumatic trunk lift assist as well. In any other vehicle I've had with trunk lifts, they've gradually quit working. These stopped all at once, making me think that it may be more than just the struts.
