1991 300SL top controller & window relay

Can anyone help me get my windows up? The controller for the top, which has the relays for the windows has been stolen or removed for some reason.
I was just hoping to be able to jump a pin in the wireing harness some place to get the windows up so I do not have to remove the door panel. Thanks, gene2 southern Illinois, coblegene@yahoo.com , 1-618-432-7298

The schematic is good, but the windows are still down. With the controller gone, I do not have any idea what to do.....Any idea other then removing the door panels?

So where exactly is the controller? These things don't just disappear. They're hard to find even when you know where they live. There's got to be more to this story. Try connecting 12V from a battery to the cables where they enter the door panels behind the kick panels.

The Controller is located in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat.
That is a good idea, but there is about 15 wires going to the door.

I suppose Dan sent you a schematic like the one attached. There should be two 12-socket electrical connectors where the controller was located, and these are the "X" and "Z" shown on the schematic.

The fuses shown on the schematic are in the trunk. To move a motor connect 12VDC to sockets #1 and #2. As you can see you make the connections right there at the connectors. I don't know what the polarity should be on #1 and #2, so just try and see what works.

My windows are up, My windows are up . Bob, When you said harness X and harness Z I finally got it. I am so happy right now...Just wanted to Thank each of you again. The information was right in front of me. I just did not understand Z as being a harness and X being another harness.
To make the driver side window go up: On the 12 pin X harness (It will be to the right as you look in the compartment)
Connect 12 volts to pin #2 (Will be a green wire.
Connect ground wire to pin #1 (Will be a black wire)
To make the window go down reverse your 12 volt wire and ground wire.
On the passenger side, use the Z harness to the left as you look in the compartment.
It will be the same procedure.
Thanks again, This forum has helped me so much over the years, gene

Hello izzoo,
Can you tell us the year and the model of the car?

If it is a 1991 SL there is a lot of info in the forum.

How experienced are you with cars and troubleshooting?

I had the same issue with my 91 300sl back when this thread started in 2010. I have since sold the SL.

I suppose the 91 and the 92 are the same.

The problem I had was caused by false trouble codes which prevented the top from going up all the way. I remember that it would go to about half way and stop. I also remember the blinking switch.

You may find the procedure back in this thread.

It involves finding the connector under the hood on the right side near the fire wall. There is a cap over the connector that you remove. You then jumper two of the sockets together for a specific number of seconds then the light on the top switch will start blinking. you need to count and record the blinks. You jumper again and count and record the blinks. You do that until there are is more blinking. Somewhere in this forum on the 300SL top is a chart posted that tells what the codes mean. Once you know the codes you go back and clear each code. Once I codes are cleared the top on my SL started to work again. I think you have to start the engine and drive the car a short distance for the top to start working.

If you clear the codes and the top does not work you need to go through the code checks again to see if one code tell you if you have a bad switch in the system. I think there are a gazillon (maybe 15) limit switches that all have to work. There are also a number of other sensor that are involved.
Sorry that I can not be more specific but at least you get the idea.

If you can not find any help in this and other threads on the topic let me know but I think I gave all of my notes and diagrams to the guy that bought the car. Bob Terry is an expert on this issue. You may want to send him a private message or he may get copied on the thread.

Good luck. I loved my 300SL! I sold to guy in Germany.
