replacing the steering wheel on a '95 sl500?

My steeering wheel is quite worn, bought the car two years ago and I have been slowly restoring it to original, or at least better condition. I would like to replace the wheel with one that has some "wood" in it. Not sure would manufacturer would make one, or at least consider replacing it with a better "used" unit I might find on the internet. Does anyone know what models or years of production might be compatible with my current vehicle and airbags? Whats involved in removing it? Besides disabling the airbags, what else do I need to know? Any help is appreciated. Steve

Its simple if u have the correct nut and bar.

U need to disconnect the airbag correct. The there is ONE nut u need to crack to get the wheel off. The old one just slides out then just pop the new one on. Anything from any sl between 91 - 02 will fit and even later model from the 230 chassis.

My friend did the work while i watched and it took 5 minutes.

BTW I have a 95 as well.

Here is the outcome.

Thats exactly what I would like to do, just as pictured. I am still "working" my way around this car, where do I access the "nut" ? If its under the airbag, how do you remove the airbag first? Where is the "switch" to disable the airbag on a '95 SL? Thanks for the ideas, Steve

behind the steering wheel there are 2 screws that hold the airbag in place they need to come out then the airbag falls off then u can get to the wires - just a simple plug, if i remember correctly. Once off the nut will be staring u right in the face.

Disconnect the battery before removing the air bag.

Performance Products sells the wood-inlayed steering wheel brand new! It's pricey though...a little over $1k I believe.

replacement steering wheel for '95 SL500

Thanks to all for explaining how to access the airbag and the nut that holds the steering wheel on. Has anyone purchased a less expensive partial wood wheel anywhere else on the less costly side of $1K? Thats why I asked about wheel compatibility, thinking I might be able to find a wreck or a take-off from someone in the salvage end of the business. I occasionally see ads for wheels but have no idea what is interchangeable. Thanks Let you know what I do. Spending $1K or even $300 is too much for this car with all of the other things that tend to go "bonk" in the night. Steve Happy New Year to ALL.
