Time to pull valve covers and check cam alignment. Rotate engine by hand to TDC with #1 on compression stroke. Check cam marks. Check guides and tensioner. Check cams and cam followers.

It sounds to me like the timing chain has jumped and the pistons have hit the valves and bent them. That's why they are sticking open.

Farting around with the ball studs isn't going to help. You need to pull the head and have it rebuilt along with some new valves. If you look you will probably find that either the upper slide rail broke and jammed a piece between the chain and the cam gear causing it to jump, or that the tensioner is shot, or that the chain is stretched, or all of the above.

The fix for this is to repair the head, new chain, new upper slide rails, new tensioner and new connectors on the oil tube. If the oil was never changed, you should also look for worn cam lobes and rockers. This is going to get expensive, so you might want to consider a used motor.

They screw into the head. One end of the rocker arm rests on the ball stud, the other on the valve stem. They have a hydraulic element in them that pushes up and holds the rocker arm against the cam lobe. Sort of like a hydraulic lifter in a pushrod engine.
