Need exhaust system for my 1983 500 SL AMG What are my options

I have the above mentioned car. It needs an exhaust system. It's a gray market car so, I'm not sure it has the same exhaust as a us spec car. What are my options? Should I go to the dealer and buy it? Is their a AMG upgrade I could install? I did not see a listing for my car on peachparts. Thanks for any info Nick.

The dealer could most likely get it for you. The other option is to go aftermarket or custom...both of which would cost a lot less! AMG exhaust would be nice, but I don't think it can be bought new, and a used one would be very difficult to find.

Dealer... check for prices as they vary considerably

Nice aftermarket stainless http://www.timevalve.com/

Or, tight ass that I am, I'd probably find an independent exhaust shop and have my old system duplicated by them.

US spec exhausts are very different to the euro. Your euro 500sl will have tri-y exhaust manifolds that connect to dual downpipes, dual downpipes continue thru a true dual exhaust with a resonator or cat to a rear dual in dual out muffler.

Assuming you need to replace the entire system, I suggest that order the dual downpipes from the dealer or independent, purchase a hi-flow magnaflow cat and a rear muffler of your choice. Then have a local exhaust shop bend the pipes required and install. Timevalve is an alternative but are overpriced.

Pre-merger AMG exhaust systems are no longer available new and rarely come to market used. I've been searching for nearly a year and only one NOS system popped up and that was in Japan. There is no performance gains by going with the AMG system as todays hiflow cats and mufflers are superior to that manufactured by AMG. My quest for an AMG exhaust is only for the sake of originality. Good luck with your build!

I ordered the manifold pipes from this on line dealer who happens to be in Medford Oregon.

If you use the EPC look at the exhaust for the 450SLC, 5.0. Everything from the manifolds back through the resonator is the same. The only difference would be the muffler. The SLC would have longer pipes from the resonator to the rear muffler.

I have the time valve system with no resonator on my '73 and I like it. I am going factory on my '84 500SL AMG.

old school AMG is NLA for ages...they all rotted away in about a week..

Timevalve has left me Utterly dissapointed on 2 occasions..that was enough for me to call it quits.

Find your local speed shop, see who they use for custom exhaust. Talk to them. Full stainless w/ magnaflow bits gives you a Very euro sound. Same style internally as AMG/Remus etc..fiberglass packing w/ perforated core...but made w/ stainless and for Quite reasonable to boot!

that's the later R129 chassis, won't fit on the 107.

It will fit my 107 chassis. but a bit on the Ugly side. I really do like the Vibrant exhaust I got muffler and resonator. I got this from Verocious Motorsports. The muffler is available in polished stainless like the resonator. The combination has a good sound on a V-12 and is quieter cruising than my stock 560SL with a DEC exhaust system.

Exhaust,Quiet high flow?
