Adjust timing belt 1976 450 SL

My 1976 450 Sl stop starting , The plugs are in good shape and they are getting sparks, but they smell gas. Car does not start , I try to adjust the fuel distributor by turn it clock wise 1/8 at a time to adjust mixing fuel and air , And I have changed the distributor ... still car does not start. I am afraid it could be the timing belt need adjustment . It seems to me that the plugs are not getting the sparks on time when the injectors are spitting the fuel. So , How can I adjust the timing belt to make the sparks work on time with the injectors. Thanks Sam

no belt on that car, it has chains, they could have jumped a sprocket, but that is unlikely unless someone was messing around or you have had a catpstrophic failure.
Dumping too much fuel sounds like the issue.. leaking injectors, leaking cold start valve ( injector) - rule those out

Chain. No belt. If you want to make sure, pull the valve covers. Rotate the engine by hand to TDC with #1 cylinder on compression stroke. Check both cams to make sure the marks line up.

Sam, based on the questions your asking I'd suggest getting a local mechanic to help you.

I will change the injectors this coming weekend, and the cold start injector and go from that point . I will post the result . Thanks for your help.

Your wasting your time and money. You should look for a local mechanic. Especially an old timer.. Because the young mechanics just wanna hook up the computer and the car has no computer (yes one). It should be a small place where you talk to the owner NOT a service writer. Don't tell them all you did to the car just be humble and tell him your wife kicked you out because you spend too much time on the car. An old timer will look over the car and tell you if it's worth spending your time & money on the car or just to sell it on Ebay and let someone else get gray hair!!!!

It's going to get REAL expensive real fast if you just keep throwing parts at the problem. Diagnose and fix what's broken.

GaryF 02-21-2010 03:27 PM

Sam looking at your old posts this engine hasnt started or running properly for nearly 2 years, as has already been said it needs a local professional opinion before throwing more parts at it. Unless you have unlimited time and money.

I guess you are right, I will check with a local MB mechanic, to see if it worth working on this engine or not. Thanks for all your concern ,I will let you know what we come out with a decision, after I see the local Mechanic.
