Any Ontario guys out there?

I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if there were many members from my province. I'm from Kemptville outside Ottawa. Where do you guys find parts for your sl's ? Is it hard to get items shipped to you from Fastlane or do you buy locally? Just wondering.

You'll find a few Ontario members at Benzworld
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c107-sl-slc-class/

I have parts from the USA drop-shipped to an address in Michigan, just across the border, then import them myself.
If you want door-to-door delivery, find someone willing to ship USPS. It's a lot cheaper than FedEx or UPS for cross-border shipments.

Do you save much versus buying in Canada?

You can get parts online much cheaper than Cdn dealer retail.

SL Owner

Hi:

Good to see that you have found the SL Forum. Welcome to the club.

I live in North Bay and have 1985 380 SL.

We have a European service garage here, their prices on parts are usually pretty good. I try to do as much maintenace as I can on my own.

I've had really good luck with this car so far. Just drive it in the summer.

Talk to you soon, John

I am in Kingston, so not that far from you. Have owned '72 350SL for 20+ years so have bought a few parts along the way!

Regarding parts, what you really have to watch if you order from the USA, is shipping costs. Unless you are close enough to border and have time to drive over to Ogdensburg to the UPS store.

There are quite a number of Canadian on-line suppliers that are competitive with the US suppliers. Here are two:

http://www.autopartsonlinecanada.com/
http://www.autopartsway.ca/

Dealer is also only source of some parts. There is an MBCA section in Ottawa and members get a discount from one of the Ottawa dealers.

I have also ordered from bimmer who have reasonable shipping costs to Canada, even although they are located in USA.

US suppliers like ******** Arizona charge exhorbitant amounts to ship to Canada, but will ship free or at low cost to a US address.

You need to get access to a parts system like the MBUSA epc - They won't register Canadians, but if you have and American friend... There is also a russian one that you can access here.

You will also need a shop manual, if you don't have one.

I hear from Ottawa owners that the Young street garage is a good shop . Haven't used them myself, but may try them one of these days.

Good Luck with the new car!

Good source of W107 parts

The owner Ken is a bit of a character but I have bought quite a few parts from these guys:

http://www.benz-store.com/index.htm

I sourced a used rear trailing arm for a 380SL in excellent shape from them for about $200. The cheapest I could find one in Ontario was about $600.

Their prices for electrics such as CCU's and cruise control amps is also lower than most of the US based shops although I try and use Fastlane as the sponsor of this site.

You have to watch autopartsonlinecanada.com, their prices are sometimes outrageous for certain parts.

I've now moved to BC and have exactly the same challenges in sourcing parts.

I have a 77 450SL and live in Carleton Place so am not too far from you. I've used Performance Products (www.performanceproducts4benz.com/) and found they provided pretty good service. They have lots of sales so if you buy when they have sales it helps defer some of the shipping costs. Thereis another company Adsitco.com that also sell MB parts but haven't bought from them yet.

I want to try shipping to the UPS store in Ogdensburg as it lowers the shipping cost which is usually a killer for us Canucks.

I have used Young Street Garage in Ottawa and found them good for service.

I ended up ordering from the States and having the parts sent to Roethels Parcel Service in Ogdensburg which is only 30 miles from here.

This guy has been spamming all auto forums.

I USED to buy some stuff from them, but had a bad experience which seeing he posted, I will share with you!

I placed an order with them some time back that included two oil filters for my SL. For some reason (maybe stock), I obtained a brand called "FULL" instead of the usual Hengst. Autopartsway said both on website and in later email that these filter were OE equivalent.

Last year, car was in local shop for some work, so I gave them one of the filters to install. It was in for one summer. When I next did an oil change, I planned on using the second FULL filter. But, first thing I noticed, was that the large O-Ring was the wrong size. Then I compared the actual filter with an OE MB that I had since bought. As you can see from the pics, the seals at the top and bottom of the element are oversize. Oil would just bypass the element. Basically my car had run for one summer with no oil filter.

I brought this to the attention of Autpartway. They were totally uncooperative. They told me to contact FULL - I did try but could not find this company. I also found that no person at Autpartsway will identify themselves. They list a street address, but it is just the location of a POBox. It appears they are just order takers and orders are shipped, mainly from Worldpac warehouses.

This company continues to sell the faulty filters. Hopefully this post will save others from using Full filters or Autopartsway!

I plan in future on dealing ONLY with sellers who have a brick and mortar location and where owners or managers provide there names and contact information.
