85 380 SL Seat Guides and Sunvisor questions

So I have a 1985 380SL that I need to get up to snuff for the summer. I am going to reupholster the seats in MB-Tex from WorldUpholstery. While I am at it I am going to take care of a few other things that I have some questions on.

1. Adjusting the seats forward and backward are a real pain as they are very hard to move. What is the cause of this? I think it may be the plasic guides that everyone mentions when taking the seat out to upholster it. If so, I can easily replace these when I am upholstering the seats. If not what may be the cause?

2. My Sun Visors look like crap and spray out a fine mist of rust from one too many times getting wet. I would love to replace them, but everywhere I go they price out the visors at a couple hundred bucks. Is this right?? Where is a cheap place to get new visors?

Thanks for any help!!

Cheers,
Nick

The seat rails may be rusty and cause the plastic inserts to bind. There is only a small amount of clearence between the upper and lower plastic inserts, any rust in the rail channels will make moving the seat either way will bind and stop. Once you have the seats out, it will become clear what I'm talking about.

I wire brushed and ran sand paper in the rail channels to remove rust, then painted and later lubed the rails. Now they work like new!

Sun Visors for these cars I've found are priced even higher than the Navy's $600 toilet seats, by compare! I seen them listed recently as high as $360 each!

For sun visors go to www.jjproducts.net. They are about $180 a set if you send them you old ones with rebuildable hardware.

Seat Repair Book

I have this book and would guess it covers everything. It is available from
http://www.**************.com/ .

Mercedes Seat Repair and Restoration
Item # MRG-GENSRR

MRG-GENSRR - This repair manual is applicable to all Mercedes models from the 1960s up to the later 1980’s.
Is your driver’s seat starting to sag more than it use to? Are you finding it is just not comfortable any more on long trips? Maybe it tips to one side and you are constantly trying to compensate your weight to other side. This manual will show you how you can remove and repair the seat yourself using original Mercedes used parts. It covers removal from the car, disassembly, upholstery removal and replacement, seat spring and pad removal and replacement, repair and lubrication of your seat tracks, reassembly, and installation back into your car. It is not a guide on how to sew new upholstery. It also addresses seat handle replacement, re-coloring, removing a power seat that won’t move by electrical power, quick repairs to sagging seats, back seat removal and installation and special notes to SL owners. I share with you my “little secret” on how to get the very best driver’s seat possible at the lowest price. I have seen so many really bad repairs come in from various upholstery shops, that I would recommend you consider fixing it yourself so you will get the lasting results you want.

Thanks for the advice. I figure that there is probably something screwy going on with the guide rails and I really would not be surprised if it was rust. I'll be sure to be prepared to deal with that when I take the seats out to reupholster them.

As to the price of new visors, I think I'd rather just slit mine open with a razor and rebuild them from the inside myself. Much Much cheaper route for an insanely expensive replacement. I bought my car from my grandfather and he included a whole set of books on repairing 107s. They are pretty thorough, covering many areas that I am going to be working on.

Hi, I know it has been 5 years since the post.

I would love to be able to replace the seat pad in my 560 drivers side.
Where can I get a copy of the instructions for doing the Pad? Would you be willing to make me a copy of the information? Thanks, Jack

Order the materials and take it to an auto upholstery shop.
