Gas Leak

I have an '89 560SL and when I start the car after it has been sitting for the winter, I have a major gas leak from the gas pump area. After the car has been runs for a while, the gas leak is less and less - eventually, the gas leak stops and all is dry for the spring, summer and fall. Car has 44,000 miles on it.Thoughts or ideas?
Thanks
S2

Fuel leaks

in that area are usually a product of the copper seals (washers) losing integrity. That was the only issue on mine when I awoke it from the dead.

They are inexpensive from the dealer. You will need 10 or 12 if you replace them all. They are also available from this site and some auto supply stores. Make sure you get the correct metric sizes for a leak-free fit. Once crushed they cannot be re-used.

If you're really ambitious, just remove the whole unit and replace all the seals, the filter and all the 20 year old rubber hoses. Then you're good for another 20 years.

I agree with Len.

Probably less than $100 parts including a new fuel filter. No more work to fix it properly than to patch it.

That said, I really can't imagine the cause of a major gas leak which disappears like that.

Gas Odor

The manual says replace the gas cap every so often. I had your problem replaced the cap and Walla! Fixed!

Buy it at the Dealer not aftermarket!
