Hot and Cold idle miss on my D Jet
so I am thinking trigger points, a good cyber MB buddy here has provided me with a nice set to replace mine. These have the plastic cover in place over the points and see no way to remove it without breaking it off, I can spray cleaner in there , but no way to burnish the points. They look very clean. Anyone have luck with just a spray , and leave the plastic protection in place. I know that mine do not have this protection and part of the reason they get oil fouled. Mine are original 72 and I dont think they ever had a cover.
Looking for suggestions and been there done that advice. Also will entertain any ideas on idle miss hot AND cold. Injectors recently been tested and refurbished

I checked my '72 and they have the covers on them. I don't know if they were ever changed but can't see a reason why they would have been.

so am I correct, no way to "burnish" the points without removal of plastic?, or am I missing something.
This idle miss is perplexing. This morning it was cool so it took a little longer to get engine to temp, but I did not notice it today. I hit her hard on a straight section of road and she pulled hard and steady then I felt it not during idle but back down to speed and during acceleration ( not hard) . Almost feels like it is dropping a cylider. What is confusing is that at times it run flawlessly. She is 38 years old , and may have to live with a few issues. Plus it is a DJET

I don't see a way to do it.

I checked a write up over on benzworld and mbgram did not have the plastic covers on the trigger points he removed. Strange. I know your '72 is a lower number than mine.

I cut some slots with a dremmel in my plastic cover so I could clean them.

Gary , now that is an idea . Of course it opens it up to blowby , but why take them out if you cant clean them.
I am goign to start with trigger points for this miss thing. No other device in the DJET system would cause the symptoms that I can think of . TPS perhaps, MPS perhaps, OK strike that last comment

Why not just try cleaning them with a spray and trying them first before cutting the plastic.

yup I will do that first . I thought I saw a good write up on the TPS cleaning and positioning , but for the life of me cant find it. I think I read that the TPS can also cause what I am having trouble with, so thought I would do both services

Hoping that a full tank of fresh gas will also help. I have two sets of trigger points. One with plastic covers (on lower points only) and one with no covers. I have not tried cleaning the plastic covered points, but wondered if they could be immersed in a solvent? Maybe ina ultrasonic bath? I don't think they ever arc or wear, so they probably only need cleaning. I attempted to adjust the old set (without the covers), but had wondered how I would ever be able to do that with the plastic covered ones. Probably have to destroy the covers Good Luck!

Thanks for looking Graham. I had some time today so I removed my dizzy and trigger points. My TP's looked worn and old compared to the other set I have. They were constructed different, the newer ones had lubrication arms and pads my original did not. Not sure if it was removed or just that way, and no covers.
I replaced them , retimed ( by ear) , checked dwell and such and I must say performs better, quicker acceleration and the miss is better but not gone. I dont think it is the TPS (since it is at idle ) and now think its not the trigger points, although the new set has helped. I guess it could be the ECU or injectors, not sure the MPS has much to do at idle. my injectors have been redone, only have 5000 miles on them Anyone care to venture a guess?

Minor adjustment of the ECU could cure it. I played with mine and it helped. It should be done with an exhaust gas analyzer.

CO or AFR analyzer definitely helps, but adjusting ecu knob won't do any harm, so long as you note where it was to start. Usually one click either way makes a difference.

True. And if I remember correctly it takes a few seconds for the system to adjust. It is not immediate.

OK got to looking again at the ECU, for some reason she is turned all the way lean, that cant be right, I think I'll move it to mid position and see what happens work lean /rich from there. I have been thinking it sound like her fuel shuts down, perhaps leaned too much. I searched years ago around here for a CO analyzer to no avail. Anyone care to tell me how many clicks their ecu is say clockwise from full lean. That is the only adjust correct??
