MSRP Internet Stealership

Phil Here, In what Galaxy and in what year will they ever hope to sell the thousands of 143 amp. Bosch Alternators for the 500 SL's that they are trying to get 2,150.00 for this one Part??????????????????????????? That's right 2,150 US. American Money.

I shop very carefully for my Sweet 500 SL and I would never entertain that MB Internet price but I just had to share this with you...........

I am not a poor person but I am also not a crazy person either..

I think that they are trying to strongly persuade you to get a rebuilt or used one.

Phil,

If you're talking about replacing your alternator check FastLane (above, Buy Parts link)
for this part...usually sells for around $150....BUT, in the vast majority of cases, it's not the alternator itself that goes bad, it's the clip-in Voltage Regulator mounted near the rear of the alternator casing that sells for about $40. See if FastLane provides a picture for you to identify this part on your alternator.

The 'wear' item here are the 'brushes' on the right side of the pic that make electrical contact with the spinning alternator. These 'brushes' wear down from normal use, so a simple replacement of the Voltage Regulator puts your alternator back in service.

alternator

I have had good luck using local alternator repair guys. Ask a competent independant repair guy whom he recommends. Nothing special about the alternator and usually they carry parts like cearings brushes and regulator cards. Usually the windings are good

For half of that kind of money, I will get one used, polish it, and chrome the fan and pulley

My bad. I saw 500SL and thought 107. Looked again and yours is a 129.
I wish MB had changed that designation to SL500 with the new body style.
