where to buy trunk lid lining?
hello all
just bought a 87 560SL and when closing the trunk lid I get a very tinny metallic sounding noise, not the solid sound I had on a 450SL. am wondering if I am missing a trunk lid liner pad which would prevent the braces on the trunk lid from hitting the lid and causing the aforementioned metallic sound. does anyone know if the 560SLs came originally with a pad/lining on the trunk lid and if so where I can buy a replacement? thanks in advance dom

Dom,
Welcome to the circle of 560SL owners! My trunk has no liner on the lid, just a really good, thick trunk seal. Good solid sound when closed. Could you have a loose hinge? You may know about www.************************/ ? They have a free catalog for SL/SLC's that features exploded views of your car showing about every part and its name. Good for reference when doing comparison shopping. And do not forget PartsShop at this site for help in finding parts numbers and competitive pricing -- buying from them helps keep this site going!!! I have no problem getting parts for my cars from the dealer, independents, nor the internet, including PartsShop. Unlike network system components, MB's aren't obsolete after a mere quarter century. the problem is I can see the cross braces vibrating when one gives the trunk lid a slight impact, thereby causing the noise. The seal around the trunk opening appears nice and thick and in fine condition. am tempted to put some 1/4in rubber foam sheeting between the cross braces and the lid.

Hmmm,
Now I understand. I went out and checked, and my cross bracing is secured to the top sheet metal of the trunk lid by what seems to be a thin layer of adhesive or a sealant of some kind. Also, there may be a nearly paper thin gasket-like material between the layers of metal. What ever is there between the lid and cross braces gives slightly to fingernail pressure, and doesn't seem any thicker than a fingernail There is no loose metal to metal contact anywhere under the lid. Hope this helps.

yes, that helps a lot! thanks for confirming that there is something acting as a cushioning barrier or fasterner of sorts.
will have to find some thin cushioning material, perhaps felt or thin rubber sheeting.
