Angry *** One second it's there, then *TINK! BAP!* Gone! ***

Last night, about 2100, I'm on I-90/I-94 coming back from Madison with the 107...just about out of a construction zone, doing 55mph, when I look into the Driver's Door Rear View Mirror (RVM) and *TINK! BAP!" - It's gone and I have a piece of sheet metal where my RVM glass used to be...and it's probably in a few hundred pieces getting ground back into the sand and silicone, from whence it came, by 1000s of vechicles...

Now the fun part...

Where can I get, just the reflective piece of glass for the Driver's Side RVM, only?

I don't believe I need the whole assemby, just the mirror itself.

It appears that the minimal amount of adhesive that held that thing in place since it rolled off the assemby line back in September of 1975 finally gave up holding and doing its job.

I've got one of those little cheapo' air-freshener-line style of convex stick-on mirrors in its place...looks pathetic and will probably end up in the on-coming lane of traffic, despite the fact that there's a generous piece of 3-M double-stick adhesive tape on the back of that thing.

A NOS piece of mirror shoudn't cost more that $20 or $25, should it?

Or, is this thing priced like platinum...sold by the gram and based on how many angles there are in its making?

I needed just the passenger side piece of glass for a 107 and couldn't find one. eBay wanted $150-200 for a entire mirror assembly. No thanks!

Maybe you can find someone parting out a 107 that can give you a deal on the glass, otherwise its expen$ive just like all 107 parts

That's an option I'll be looking into this week...but I'm getting the feeling that "$$$/angle" is the pricing table I'll be seeing the SA looking at...with $$$$ signs in his eyes...

I'll be checking other sources, that's for sure. In the meantime, I'll keep a small pile of those cheapo stick-ons for backup. BTW, the larger (I didn't think it was THAT LARGE!) round unit JUST barely didn't fit. So I have a spare for something...maybe the S-10...

Mirror assemblies pop on/off

Mirror with backing plate "pops" in /out on socket joints. If you put a screwdriver behind whats left, you should be able to pull off backing plate and replace.Your best bet would be wrecking yard as I'm pretty sure most mid 70's through 80's 107,116,123 are the same.If unable to locate they are available new for 40-60$
FWIW my mirror did the same thing when my daughter closed the door.Fell onto concrete and smashed into hundreds of little pieces!

Save that plastic backing plate. That's what you have to glue to your new glass to have it hold in the shell and be able to use the remote operation.

I had a mirror glass pop out of a mounting on another vehicle, and was able to reattach it to the existing mounting hardware.

Try cleaning thoroughly to get dust and oils off, put on a few dabs of RTV silicone (clear), and keep in place by whatever means necessary for enough time to cure, about 10 - 12 hours. Be carefu of what you use to clean the back with, you don't want to take the silvering off.

I know this doesn't help with getting the mirror itself, but maybe on the next step of installing it.

Exclamation *** Non-Electric Heated Mirror (at least, on the D's side!) ***

Here's an interesting thing I noticed on the drive back from Milwaukee this afternoon...

On the right 1/2 side of the "plate" that held the glass (before it *TINKED!* *BAPPED!* *WENT!*) there are 3 little holes that each have a "grommet" in them and they sit in a "depressed" area of the plate. And the oddest thing...the engine heat that's directed into the door from the "airway" rectangle coming from the A Pillar...that's ALSO being directed up to and behind the plate...it's a full-time mirror de-icer/de-fogger.

Now I have a better idea why the glue dried out as it did.

I took my little RatShack Infared Temperature probe and shot the plate...It read 125° F., while driving along I-94/I-90. The heat coming down on my legs (this is another problem for another thread) is about 140° F.-145° F.!!! Today's ambient air temp. was approx. 81° F. to 85° F. during my traveling time.

BTW, the only "remote" operation I have with this original setup is tilting the mirror up or down...the azimith is permanently set.
