Modernize 77 450SL

I want to put a domestic engine and trans. into my car. I don't want to be speedy, I just want safe reliable, inexpensive, and comfortable ride with style, inexpensively. Any help would be appreciated.

Inexpensive and SL aren't exactly two words that go together. The amount of money you put into putting a domestic (and subpar IMO) drivetrain in place of the well engineered engine and transmission already in there may in fact be more than the cost it would be to properly maintain what's already in there.

Putting an American engine in a SL "inexpensively" would be impossible unless you already have everything you will need, and are willing to do everything yourself. Lots of time and money involved otherwise. Which engine/transmission are you thinking of doing?

How far do you drive each day? Rip the drivetrain out and go electric

It's considered courtesy on this site (correct me if I'm wrong) to at least know what country you are in. State/province or city would be nice as well.

So would info on the car: mileage, how long you have driven it, any history you know of, issues which made you decide to ask the question, etc., so that the people willing to help you don't have to ask 25 questions in order to give you an answer.

Bear in mind also that this is a voluntary website, so the more info you give, the easier you make it to answer you satisfactorily.

Years ago, I'd get calls at the shop:

" My car's not working, what would it cost to fix it?"
" What's wrong with it?"
"I dunno."
"What kind of car is it?"
" I dunno.Red."
You get the picture.

strelnik, if your customers were smarter, they wouldn't have needed you to fix things.

I met a guy in centerville who said he had a 350SL with a small block 350. I'm not sure how far along with it he is.

Find a nice clean car and it would be plenty modern and plenty reliable for you.

Now now. Not everyone is opposed to this. If you have fantastic mechanical skills you can do it.

Of course you will end up with a Mercedes that is worth nothing. But what the heck it is yours. These abortions occasionally show up on ebay and the seller really thinks he has done something. They don't even get serious bids.

Good luck!

I drive one of my cars daily, and I plan on keeping it until they take the keys away. Obviously, I like it. I would like it even more if it had the drivetrain out of a totaled 2010 Camaro and delivered 300HP and ~20 MPG in the city (with less emissions to boot). There is a place for a restored car, and there is a place for a modified car. "Resto-mods" are very popular with muscle cars these days, and their legitimacy is confirmed by high auction prices for well-executed examples.

Yeah a new Chevy powertrain would be fun, but probably not inexpensive. I used to like doing engine swaps as they were readily available and cheap. The last one I did was in 1984; swapped a '60 283 Chevy engine with a '67 Corvette 327 300hp 4speed. I bought the Corvette engine/trans for $50 in good running condition and the swap was completed in one day. I wish I had either of those engines back!

Anything can be done if you have the funds and time. I saw a Honda CB750 4 cylinder engine in a minibike once; saw two 427 Corvette engines in a Ford Pinto. I'm curious as to which engine/trans they have in mind.

An LT1 350 from a 94-96 Roadmaster or Caprice would be a good choice.

22-24 mpg and all the power you need.

Look if you are going through all the pain of putting in a Chevy engine. Then put in a Chevy Engine
