99 SL500 - Top & Rollbar inoperative

Hello,

I know there are dozens of posts on this subject here, but have not been able to find a method to diagnose my particular problem. After replacing the front soft top latches and having the system work fine for months, the roll bar & soft top actuation has stopped working. No flashing lights on the buttons. I do hear a solenoid click when I try to activate either the top or the rollbar, however the pump does not start. Oil level is OK. Battery charge is OK, and underhood fuses #19 and #20 are good. Any thoughts?

Do the windows go down? Have you tried re-syncing the windows?

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. Yes, windows appear to be operating normally - they will raise and lower when the soft top switch is pressed, however the hydraulic system doesn't activate.

My 1991 has a fuse box in the trunk. I don't know about the 1999 model. But it's worth a look. Check this link for the fuse list and placement.

R129 fuse designation ..?

Thank you, yes I forgot about that small panel in the trunk. All fuses are OK there however, including the 40A hydraulic pump fuse.

Next thing I'd do is take a volt meter and measure if 12volts gets to the hydraulic pump motor when the top switch is activated.

tecqboy,
Is it accurate that on the '99, the SDS can read the DTC's out of the top controller? If so, perhaps our friend should see what the diagnostics are showing.

Bob

Hello, thanks for writing - it's my understanding that 96-up 129's require a scanner to read any DTC's generated by the top/rollbar controller, the old paperclip trick won't work. I would guess that any active DTC's would cause the dash and/or button lights to light up, however they are all off (the small arrows on the rollbar switch flash when the car starts, but do not stay lit).

even with the dash and control button not illuminated you can still have stored faults. hook up to the 38 pin conector and see whats going on
